Top Ten Organization Selection Guidelines

Each Task Force selected their top ten based upon the following guidelines:

1. Address one or a combination of seven global challenges in the 21st century by involving citizen-to-citizen partnerships between Americans and people throughout the world.

The global challenges are:

  • Preserving the Environment
  • Reducing Poverty & Disease
  • Increasing Respect for Human Rights
  • Creating a Globally Competent Society
  • Encouraging Cultural Engagement
  • Achieving Food Security
  • Securing U.S. & Global Financial Security

2. Include and identify, if at all possible, an international partner organization or organizations and identify a country/countries or region(s) of the world the program will take place.

3. Involve partnerships with other U.S. citizen diplomacy NGOs in the sector or another sector to leverage the combined strength and expertise of the U.S. civilian capacity involved in international activity. Partnerships between and with other U.S. citizen diplomacy organizations will also demonstrate how existing organizations can expand their international outreach.

4. Demonstrate, when possible and appropriate, innovative uses of new media technologies to increase participation and engage a wider audience of citizen diplomats.

5. Measure progress to enable best practices and sustainability to be identified throughout the nonprofit sector.

6. Under-served populations should be included in proposals to provide opportunities to address cultural diversity and describe programs that are inclusive for both men and women and under-served populations

7. When and if at all possible, programs should include opportunities for youth. The definition of youth, i.e. the age range, is left up to the discretion of each task force.
