Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy today announced that U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will participate in the U.S. Summit & Initiative for Global Citizen Diplomacy in Washington, D.C., a two and a half day event that will bring together high level international experts addressing global affairs faced in the 21st century.
The Summit, which is being launched by the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy (USCCD) in collaboration with the U.S. State Department, marks the first such meeting since President Eisenhower’s People-to-People conference on the same subject on September 11, 1956 and will serve as the launch for a “Decade of Citizen Diplomacy,” to double the number of American citizen diplomats by 2020. Secretary LaHood will attend the Summit’s Welcome Reception on November 17 and honor international guests, members of the summit leadership council, and task force and roundtable chairs.
“Taking the initiative to improve America’s relations through citizen diplomacy will strengthen the nation’s global partnerships,” Secretary LaHood said. “This summit will create a unique and innovative opportunity for us to reach out to our allies, close the cultural divide, and address the challenges facing our countries and the world.”
Established in 2006, the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization that promotes and expands opportunities for all Americans to be citizen diplomats and affirms the indispensable value of citizen involvement in foreign relations.
