International Students’ Benefit to US Economy

Today for International Education Week, we will focus on the recently released NAFSA publication that points out the economic benefits of international education to the US economy. From the new economic impact reports and study abroad data comes some pretty profound and significant numbers that were compiled on a state-by-state basis detailing the economic numbers that were contributed by international students to the local and state economy. You can clearly see the numerical value, as if the intangible and priceless value of international students wasn't enough.
In addition to the breadth of intangible contributions made by the presence of a diverse international study body, these international students have contributed over $20.2 billion to the US economy. They support local businesses in the communities where they attend college and enrich those places with their cultural heritage through relationship building and campus activities.
Although we are able to see the monetary value in our much treasured international student body, there are also other benefits to the university academic-wise. Through the avenue of international education, students bridge the gaps between the US and other countries; they add global perspectives and contribute to the dialogue on a number of transnational and multicultural issues; they also introduce new topics and request new classes on campus which might not otherwise be offered if not for their attendance.
Take a look at how international students benefit your home state and community. You can even break it down by university and see how your school ranks in number of students as well as total contribution dollars.
